DELPHI, Ind. (WLFI) - Tuesday marks one year since two girls went missing near the Monon High Bridge Trail in Delphi. Ever since then, an entire community has been praying for justice for Abby Williams and Libby German. Perhaps one of the strongest prayer warriors is Carroll County Sheriff Tobe Leazenby.
Sheriff Leazenby said in his 32 years in law enforcement, this is unlike anything the county has ever seen.
On Feb. 13, 2017, the two girls spent the day hiking and never showed up to their meeting place. Sheriff Tobe Leazenby remembers how the night unfolded. He grew increasingly concerned as the search continued into the late night hours.
"If you go back and look at some of our past investigations of missing children or runaways, our percentage success rate of finding those kids or having those kids return home is extremely high," said Leazenby.
The bodies of the girls were found the next day. While he can't talk about the investigation, Leazenby can talk about the massive community effort to help locate the girls.
"For everyone to rally around and come out and assist, it was just truly amazing. I wish I could thank every one of them," said Leazenby.
He said it hasn't been an easy year for the small-town law enforcement agency.
"We've had our share of murders and homicides, but this one, if you will, what struck a nerve with this one is obviously the innocence or the innocence that was taken away," said Leazenby.
Sheriff Leazenby said his faith has gotten him through the last year.
"I still feel blessed in what the good Lord has provided me and has put me in this position for a purpose and that is justice and righteousness."
One year later, Sheriff Leazenby has a message for the community.
"Hold your kids and your grandkids closer and give them a hug and really realize how important they are as being a part of your family."
He also has a message for whoever is responsible.
"We will find you and there will be justice for Abby and Libby."
Sheriff Leazenby recently announced he will run for re-election, saying a large part of the decision was based on justice for Abby and Libby.
News 18 will continue coverage on Tuesday. We will be airing a 30-minute special at 5:30 p.m., recapping the events that have taken place this last year.
