TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Local shelters are saying that it's not a good idea to gift a pet for Christmas.

Natalie's Second Chance Executive Director Jackie Becker said many people end up surrendering the pet.

Becker advised that people should make sure they can make time for a family pet.

She also said pets take a lot of time, patience and money that some families don't think about.

Becker also advised people to think thoroughly before gifting a pet for Christmas.

"Starting in February or March we are going to have people lined up saying I got this puppy at Christmas and it's too much work, I didn't realize how big it was going to be," explained Becker.

Becker said people need to keep in mind that most area wide shelters are full.
