WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - It's a game measured by a player's few successes, but for Mason Bruce, he is hoping to build off his experience in last year's Colt World Series.
"I didn't hit the ball that great last year, but I've been working, so hopefully it will pay off. It's a game of failure and you just have to work at it and work at it to be the best you can be. It just doesn't come natural," said Mason Bruce.
Mason and the rest of the Lafayette All-Stars have practiced and played as a team for a little over a month. While the team is made up of some of the area's best 15 and 16 year old talents, coach Josh Loggins says they may be asked to play outside of their comfort zone.
"The biggest challenge from a coaching stand point is fielding a team because you've got a lot of guys that play different positions during the season. Then they come out here and we expect them and ask them to do something a little different possibly because we are trying to field a lineup that is.going to be competitive," said Josh Loggins.
In their final practice before the Colt World Series Loggins has had his team practicing the basics, fielding grounders, taking batting practice and even working on the intentional walk.
In June most of these players hardly knew each other, but come Friday they will compete in the same tournament that baseball legends Tony LaRussa, Lou Pinella and Bobby Bonds once played in.
"Baseball is everything. I mean I go in the backyard and just hit off the tee for three hours. I just love baseball. Baseball is life," said Bradyn Bordenet.
"It's really special to me because it means that I am one of the better players in Lafayette and I really take that to be an hour," said Alec Beaver.
The Lafayette All Stars will begin their Colt World Series run tomorrow night when they face Greensboro, North Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 8 PM.
