LOGANSPORT, Ind. (WLFI) - The McCutcheon girls soccer team cruised past Jay County 7-0 on its way to the regional finals.
After a slow start, the 17th ranked Mavericks made the most of their opportunities on the offensive end and made short work of the Patriots. Junior midfielder Becca Spitalniak puts the lady Mavs on the board first six minutes in on a Koral Briggs assist. Moments later Spitalniak returned the favor to the freshman by assisting Briggs for a goal to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.
McCutcheon would add two more goals in the opening half and led 4-0 at intermission. From that point on the Mavericks worked on the little things which they believe will be important on Saturday.
"It was a little bit of a trap game and it could've been bad if they didn't come out and play very well at all during the game but like I said they really pulled together so at that point we were able to work on some things that we needed to work on to get ready for Saturday," said McCutcheon head coach Jason Donkersloot.
A year ago the Mavericks were in the same situation, they advanced to the regional finals where they lost to Hamilton Southeastern 2-0. This season the Mavericks believe they are ready to make the next step as a program.
"It gives us motivation into the game on Saturday to help us keep our heads high and gives us confidence because last year the championship didn't come out how we had it planned but this year we have a game plan and we know what we need to do and we want to come out with a win because that is our goal," said senior forward Elizabeth Burton.
McCutcheon will face Fishers on Saturday afternoon in the regional finals, play is set to begin at 1 pm.
