WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Lafayette Central Catholic's baseball team claimed its fifth straight state championship on Saturday with a 4-3 win at Victory Field.
The win didn't come easy though for the Knights. Central Catholic trailed Vincennes Rivet 3-0 in the fifth inning.
LCC trailed 3-1 to begin the bottom of the 7th but the Knights rallied to score two runs to push the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the 9th, Adam Lovell's walk-off single off Chase Allen boosted Lafayette Central Catholic to the 4-3 win over Vincennes Rivet.
"My teammates have been telling me to go up there with a bunch of confidence knowing that I could get the bat on the ball and I just hit it," said freshman left fielder Adam Lovell.
Lovell racked up two RBIs on two hits for LCC. He singled in the sixth and ninth innings.
Another freshman who came up big was third baseman Luke Fusiek, he finished the day 3-4 and drove in one and scored one run. He doubled in the sixth inning and singled in the seventh and ninth innings.
Andrew Hubertz struck out eight hitters en route to the Lafayette Central Catholic win. Hubertz allowed two earned runs on eight hits and one walk over nine innings.
"It looked like we were out for a little bit but we came back with a surge of our own scoring two in the seventh to keep it going and then just a new game from there. We scored one to win the game right there as Adam came up huge," said senior pitcher Andrew Hubertz.
Central Catholic finishes the season with a 31-5 record.
