WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The Black team outscored the Gold squad, 50-41, in the second half to pull away for a 92-79 victory in the final Purdue men’s basketball preseason scrimmage in front of approximately 1,700 fans at Mackey Arena on Saturday morning.
The scrimmage was the final tune-up before Wednesday’s exhibition game against the University of Indianapolis.
"I thought we showed some pretty good defense away from the basketball and did some good things there. I thought it was a definite improvement from the first scrimmage and that's what you're looking for," said Purdue head coach Matt Painter.
Three freshmen, Bryson Scott, Basil Smotherman and Kendall Stephens, combined for 54 of Black’s 92 points on 17-of-30 field goal attempts and 17-of-19 free throws, while pulling down 19 rebounds between them. Smotherman was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field (2-of-2 from three-point range) for 18 points and six rebounds. Scott tallied 23 points (9-of-10 free throws) with four rebounds, four assists and five steals, while Stephens added 13 points and nine rebounds.
Senior Terone Johnson led the Black squad with 26 points, four rebounds and three assists while going 9-of-18 from the field and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe.
"We have a lot of things to work on so I'm happy in the direction we're going obviously but I think we have a lot of things to work on coming up next week," said Terone Johnson.
Sophomore Ronnie Johnson showed off his improved offensive game, scoring 25 points on 11-of-17 field goal attempts with six rebounds, six attempts and three steals to lead the Gold.
The Johnson Brothers combined for 51 points on 20-of-35 shooting.
Errick Peck scored 14 points with six rebounds and three assists for the Gold squad, while Rapheal Davis recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
"We just have to get into a better rhythm on offense, people are still learning the motion offense, I'm new to it as well so there are certain times I'm on the floor and there is smoke coming out of my ears but I think we will be ready to go come next Wednesday for our first exhibition and for our first game we'll be fine," said Errick Peck.
Sterling Carter would connect on 5-of-9 three-point attempts for 15 points and A.J. Hammons scored 11 points with eight rebounds, also for the Gold squad.
The two squads combined to shoot 62-of-133 (.466) from the field, 10-of-31 (.323) from three-point range and 37-of-48 (.771) from the free throw line. The squad did combine for 27 assists against 28 turnovers.
