WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - As the temperature rises, many of us are thinking once again of shorts and flip flops. But if you have thick or flaky toenails, the last thing you may want to do is show off your toes.
"I always kind of describe this thickness in your nails like acne, like cold sores around your mouth: it's annoying, not life-changing," said Peoria-area physician Dr. Paul Kinsinger.
Kinsinger said he has seen many patients with thick and unsightly toenails. But he said he has created a more natural product to get softer, healthier nails. Taking from a home remedy for toenail fungus, "Dr. Paul's Piggy Paste" is just vinegar and thymol (better known as Listerine) mixed into a penetrating gel.
"You could just shower in the morning, dry off, put the product on, and just go on with your day," Kinsinger said.
Patients put the paste on the cuticle of the affected toenail and wrap it in a bandage for at least two hours.
"In three months, you have normal healthy nail," Kinsinger said.
Montmorenci resident Gary Stetler said he tried everything to get rid of his thick and flaky toenails. He started using Dr. Paul's Piggy Paste a couple weeks ago.
"Before it was so hard and brittle and flaky and now it's softened it up a lot. I can tell a difference. But like he said, it takes 90 days to help a bunch. But I really think it will work," Stetler said.
Dr. Kinsinger said the next step for his product is a clinical trial.
"I've tried to get away from saying it gets rid of toenail fungus because we haven't done a clinical trial but it does improve the thickness and the ability to trim your nail," Kinsinger said.
Kinsinger has high hopes for his product to kick other conditions in both humans and livestock animals.
