WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - West Lafayette Police are warning residents about car thieves in the area. According to police, the thieves are stealing people's property and even their identity.
West Lafayette Police Lieutenant Troy Harris said two instances were reported at Happy Hollow Park early last week.
Harris said two purses were stolen from two separate cars at the park. He said the thieves quickly assumed the victim's identity and began cashing personal checks left in the purses. They also used credit and debit cards.
The locations targeted seem to be places where people stay for a short time and leave their purses in the car, such as a park or the gym.
Harris said people need to always be aware of their surroundings, and should never keep personal items in the car.
