LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - If you're a fan of river otters and other zoo creatures, Sunday was your last chance this year to see them in Lafayette. The Columbian Park Zoo is now closed for the winter.
In the off season, workers make sure all warm weather animals are comfortable in a temperature controlled environment. They'll also work to get the animals more active and sociable.
Workers say despite the heat this summer, the zoo's attendance was very good. They believe the zoo's long history keep families coming back.
"We're 104 years old," Columbian Park Zoo Assistant Educational Coordinator, Courtney Nave, said. "[Zoo patrons] remember Monkey Island, the elephant, [and] the aviary. They have their favorite things. They're now coming back with their children and grandchildren. [The zoo] is not only still here, it's getting bigger and better."
The zoo will reopen from October 24-26 for the annual Boo at the Zoo event. It will take place from 6:30 p. m. until 9 on those nights.
The zoo will reopen for the summer 2013 season in mid April.
