LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - McCutcheon High School has a new logo, but changing the logo wasn't necessarily by choice.
It all started with a letter addressed to McCutcheon High School last fall.
The sender? The University of Texas at Austin.
"You just wouldn't think such a large institution would track down a relatively small high school in the United States," said Tippecanoe School Corporation Superintendent Scott Hanback.
Inside the envelope was a letter Hanback said surprised him.
"They were making the point that our longhorn style maverick logo was really confusingly similar to the University of Texas Longhorn symbol," said Hanback.
Hanback said it left the school corporation with a few options.
"I'm sure one of the options would have been a monetary settlement with the university," said Hanback.
Yet, he said that was an option that wasn't even explored.
"In our opinion, the only option we had was to go ahead and review the letter, and ultimately, make a change to our logo," said Hanback.
A picture of that new logo now hangs in the McCutcheon athletic office, and Hanback said it's a logo that suits the school quite well.
"They have a logo now that they like better, and it's maybe more modern or more maybe more current now," said Hanback.
McCutcheon High School Principal John Beeker said changing the old school logo to the new one, could cost the school about $15,000, but Hanback said it's a cost they were expecting.
"When you're talking about paintings inside the school, or you're talking about changing a letter head or wherever else the logo might be, there's going to be some expense with that," said Hanback.
Hanback said the University of Texas will give McCutcheon time to phase out the logo.
Beeker said the school is hoping to have the logo completely wiped out by 2016.
