WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - It has been about a year since the first roundabout opened to drivers in West Lafayette near the intersection of Yeager Road and Northwestern Avenue.
While traffic has eased up in town, West Lafayette Police Captain Gary Sparger said there still seems to be some confusion about how to drive through them.
"People get rear-ended because they don't prepare to stop before they come to a roundabout," Captain Sparger said. "All of a sudden they have to yield to traffic and slam on their breaks. The other cause of crashes is drivers will just drive into the roundabouts and not look to your left and realize there is other traffic in the roundabout."
Monday afternoon, Sparger demonstrated just how to drive through a roundabout properly.
"I look at the yield sign," Sparger explained. "If you can see a car coming, they've got the right away on me. This guy hasn't really prepared to stop so I'm going to stop for him. You look to your left and just drive right through. It's pretty simple!"
"People make the assumption that a roundabout is like playing dodgeball when in essence it's not," West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis said. "People entering the roundabout have to yield to the traffic that's currently in the roundabout. People who are in the roundabout have to pre-plan their destination."
"Looking to your left for traffic that's already in the roundabout and just preparing to stop, if you do those two things, you're golden," Captain Sparger said. "You'll learn to get back and forth to work a lot quicker. When we get the hang of it, I think it will be nice."
Mayor Dennis said he'd eventually like to see a roundabout at the intersection of State Street and U.S. 231.
