WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A Purdue ROTC member has her dream come true with the help of Skype. Keely Hughes was sworn into the Navy by her father Friday.
Her dad was deployed to Afghanistan two weeks ago. Hughes said she always wanted her father, a U.S. Marine, to swear her in.
She said her executive officer arranged for him to be at the ceremony via Skype. Hughes said it was an emotional day.
"It was the first time I had seen my dad since he was deployed, and it was the first time any of my family had seen him since he was deployed," Hughes said. "So there were plenty of tears in the room. I tried to keep a straight face for most of my family. It was a good day. There were happy tears."
Hughes graduated from Purdue this weekend with a degree in biochemistry. She will be stationed in Maryland starting next month.
