WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Our partner, the Purdue Exponent, has learned Purdue's new president will be announced Thursday.
The announcement is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., Thursday in Loeb Playhouse. A video feed will be provided to an overflow crowd in Fowler Hall. The announcement and subsequent press conference is scheduled through noon.
Former president Steven Beering confirmed the news Monday.
"They are planning to make an announcement Thursday," Beering said. "I found that out yesterday."
The University of Houston Chancellor and president Renu Khator was on campus this last weekend. Khator, who earned a Master's and Ph.D. from Purdue was in Washington D.C. Monday with the American Council on Education, where she sits on the Board of Directors.
A spokesman at the University of Houston told NewsChannel 18 they are not aware of any announcement. They added she is scheduled to be back in Houston tomorrow and Khator had not canceled any meetings for Thursday. Khator tweeted late Monday, "Don't believe in any speculative news...I am a Cougar and fully committed to UH."
Beering will be unable to attend the event and does not know who the candidate is, although he said he has heard of Governor Mitch Daniels as a possible candidate.
"Mitch Daniels has been mentioned a number of times," Beering said. "I'll be surprised along with you when we find out Thursday ... It goes with the way they've handles the searches. It's very secretive."
Several messages left by NewsChannel 18 with the Governor's office were not returned.
