Karen Pence stopped by Glen Acres Elementary in Lafayette Aug. 27 to talk with some third graders.
Pence is preparing for a mission trade trip with her husband to Japan this month.
Pence, who was a teacher for years, showed students how to draw a self portrait that she will take with her to Japan. She said it was the most fun she has had in a long time.
"This is the most fun I've had since I was First Lady," said Pence. " It's the funniest thing for me to be back in the classroom with kids. This was really a treat for me, I had way more fun than they did today.
The pictures will be given to children at Ota Elementary in Lafayette's sister city of Ota City, Japan.
