LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - "Memorial Day weekend is one of the deadliest," said Indiana State Trooper Darrick Scott.
Memorial Day Weekend. It's a time to enjoy some great food and time with family.
Yet, Scott said it can also be one of the most dangerous times of year on the road.
"We've got more vehicles on the road, we've got more impatient drivers on the road," said Scott.
Scott said law enforcement officers are prepared for what can often be a chaotic weekend.
"We're going to have more officers out on the road from state police, county, as well as city, looking for aggressive drivers as well as impaired drivers," said Scott.
This year, AAA is predicting a decrease in the amount of people preparing to travel this holiday weekend. The agency projects 34.8 million Americans will travel this year, compared to 35.1 million people last year.
News 18 spoke with six people at a West Lafayette gas station about their holiday plans Friday afternoon, and of those six, only one plans to hit the road this holiday weekend.
For some, it was the gas prices keeping them tied down.
"I was going to go visit my brother, but with the gas prices the way they are, I was thinking we're just going to end up staying home," said Sally Akers.
Others said they plan to stay in town to spend time with family.
"I think we're just going to relax a little bit, I think a lot of our kids are going to be coming into town," said Jim Ward.
Others said they plan to spend time in the community they love.
"I want to be here for the memorial services for one thing, and I just love the community," said Lee McReynolds. "This is where I live, and it's exciting."
No matter what your plans are this holiday weekend, Scott said they'll be ready.
