WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - An empty field sits across from the Wabash Landing development. But the Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commission could change that with the approval of a proposed Hampton Inn and Suites hotel at Tapawingo Drive and State Street.
It could be the first of many changes coming to the street.
"[We want] to create a master plan with a look, taste, touch, feel that you're in West Lafayette, you're now at Purdue, one continuous streetscape," West Lafayette Development Director Chandler Poole said.
On Wednesday the West Lafayette Redevelopment Commission approved a proposal for the city, Purdue University and the Purdue Research Foundation to work with an outside consultant to develop a master plan for the State Street corridor from the river to US 231.
Commission president Larry Oates said this proposal is the first of its kind.
"It's the first time we're going to take a comprehensive look at State Street, and what development would be along State Street, and how that road will interact the now new 231 and the commercial district at the far east side," Oates said.
Poole will work with stakeholders like residents and State Street business owners to get feedback on what the corridor should look like.
Poole said that process will take six to nine months. Then, phase two will bring in discussions with developers.
"[We'll say] 'here's what we need to do, here's our plan on how it needs to work, this is what we want to see as far as widths of sidewalks, this is what we want to see as far as treatment of sidewalks, amenities, these types of things,'" Poole said.
A main focus of the design will be how to get pedestrians up and down State Street, and through busy intersections safely.
"What do we do with all the interchanges," Poole said. "Do we do roundabouts or do we continue with signals? So moving pedestrians along State Street will be important to us."
The Area Plan Commission will hear the hotel proposal at its August 21 meeting.
