LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - According to firefighters, when you spring your clocks forward, you should check your smoke alarms too.
Firefighters said it's important to check the batteries and make sure everything is working properly at least twice a year.
According to firefighters, a working smoke alarm can double your chances of surviving a house fire.
Lafayette Fire Inspector David Thomas said having a plan in place in case of a fire is just as important.
"Have a home escape plan," said Thomas. "Develop that with the whole family. Practicing that plan is the second important item there, to know what to do if you do hear the smoke alarm. Have a meeting place outside where everyone can meet and account for everyone."
According to Thomas, everyone should check their carbon monoxide detectors as well.
