CLINTON COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Four fire departments, Perry and Mulberry Townships in Clinton County, Darlington from Montgomery County, and Clarks Hill from Tippecanoe County responded to the fire at Coomer Pallet Company Friday night.
Perry Township Fire Chief Jerrad Blacker said it happened just before 9:30 p.m.
"We had no idea what kind of fire it was. We arrived about eight minutes later to find this building behind us, about 100 feet by 80 feet, totally in flames and partially collapsed at that point," Blacker said.
The fire at the pallet company, located on County Road 650 South just west of Colfax, could be seen from U.S. 52 near Clarks Hill.
Blacker said, luckily, crews were able to save some of the equipment from the fire at the building.
"Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment and we were able to protect that," Blacker said. "Once the power was cut we got those disconnected and moved away from the building. Then there was a lot of sawdust on the north end, a lot, and we were able to protect that. It's separated from the fire structure at this time."
Blacker said it's not the first time the fire department has visited this pallet company.
"It's probably seven to ten years ago we had a fire in a building just similar to this. It's a common theme with pallet companies. They tend to have fires," he said.
You may recall, News 18 reported on two other fires similar to this one earlier this year. In January a fire at the Industrial Pallet Corporation in Tippecanoe County destroyed the Recycling Operation Center at the plant. In July a fire at the Coomer and Sons Sawmill caused nearly $300,000 worth of damage.
Blacker said fire investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire Friday night.
