LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A fire broke out at the Hour Time Restaurant on State Road 26 Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters said they were called to the scene just before 2 p.m. The fire started at the back exterior wall of the restaurant and spread to the attic, just above the walk-in freezer. A waiter noticed the fire and called 911.
Server Damon Villegas said he was surprised to see how quickly the fire spread.
"It was pretty big," said Villegas. "It started about mid-way and was shooting out through the rooftop. It was just craziness."
Firefighters said heat from the flames warped the freezer's aluminum cover and exposed insulation. The county health inspector was also on scene and said the freezer will need to be replaced, as well as the food inside. The restaurant was closed for the rest of the day.
The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental. Hour Time is now open to customers.
