TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - With a mild summer and minimal rainfall, grapes in Indiana are thriving with the ideal weather conditions. Purdue Viticulture Specialist Bruce Bordelon said the near perfect weather improves the quality of grapes for wine making.
"We like warm, sunny days, but cool nights. And that helps give us high sugar levels, but maintain some of the acidity in the fruit, which is important for the tartness in the wine," said Bordelon.
Bordelon said this weather also improves the flavor and aroma compounds in wine. However, the weather doesn't need to be like this the entire season.
"Just the last four to six weeks of the growing season before harvest is really important for fruit quality," said Bordelon.
Wildcat Creek Winery owner Rick Black said he's heard positive feedback from the vineyards throughout the state, including vineyards he gets his product from. Black said he looks forward to the quality of grapes he will be receiving this year.
"The weather that's forecast the next couple of weeks is supposed to be perfect for ripening the product," said Black.
Bordelon said at this point, rain can negatively affect the grape crop. He said rain could split the skins and the quality would deteriorate quickly.
"We have yeast and bacteria that are just natural in the environment will begin to grow on that sugar. Fruit flies are attracted to it. It just leads to spoilage problems and that's never good," said Bordelon.
Bordelon said he still believes the grape crop looks promising and so does the quality of wine.
