LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A jury found a Lafayette couple guilty in a child abuse caseThursday afternoon.
Careena Kelley and Ryan Rogers were on trial for abusing theirinfant daughter in 2008. This is the second time the case has beenbrought to trial, because it was declared a mistrial the firsttime. They have now been convicted of neglect of a dependant.
This morning, their child was brought into the Superior Twocourtroom and presented to the jury. She sat on her mother's lapand was asked to touch her nose and chin to demonstrate herabilities.
The prosecutor argued her medical injuries are evidence of"shaken baby syndrome."
The defense argued it was an accident, that the father wascarrying the baby and accidentally dropped her, head-first, onto avacuum.
Kelley and Rogers will be sentenced in about a month. Rogers isexpected to be ordered to serve at least six years in prisonbecause he has prior felony convictions.
