WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - With the what happened at the Boston Marathon in the forefront of everyone's mind a suspicious PVC pipe capped off on both ends sparked a bomb scare near Purdue's Campus.
"You know with the events that happened in Boston people expected the worst," West Lafayette Police Lt. Troy Harris said.
Craig Thrash was nearby when the bomb squad showed up.
"They told me they saw a pipe, a PVC pipe capped off on both ends," Thrash said. "If I see that I'm going to think it's a bomb myself."
Harris said a passer-by reported the PVC pipe found at the intersection of Sylvia and Grant streets.
"Could look like a bomb," Harris said. "Could look like some sort of explosive device."
Police quickly closed off the intersection and evacuated all surrounding homes and apartments.
The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad responded to investigate the suspicious pipe by using a robot. The robot blasted the end off the pipe to see what was inside. It was empty.
Harris said they discovered the pipe had been used to hold brochures for a home for sale nearby. It had fallen off the sign it was attached to and ended up at the intersection of Sylvia and Grant.
"It was a great learning experience for us," Harris said. "It went smooth. It was swift. Everybody acted appropriately and even though it turned out to be nothing everything was followed to a T."
Even though the area was in no real danger Harris said law enforcement agencies are always on their toes to respond to the unknown.
"We're a smaller town, much smaller than Boston but you have to be vigilant," Harris said. "You never know. Crime and violence could be anywhere."
Harris said this is a situation local law enforcement agencies do not deal with very often. He said they followed protocol and bomb or not everyone involved responded exactly how they should have.
