LOGANSPORT, Ind. (WLFI) - "There's been some really nasty places, yes. Just about anything you can imagine is out there," Logansport code enforcement George Franklin said.
Franklin has been inspecting rental homes all month. He's checking ventilation systems, heating and air conditioning units, windows, and doors. He's also checking smoke alarms and searching for mold.
It's all part of a rental inspection ordinance. Building commissioner Bill Drinkwine said they're working to improve the overall quality of life for tenants.. and curb appeal.
"Put pressure on rental property owners to reinvest their money in the property rather than just take the money and not do any reinvesting, which in a lot of the property is what we see," Drinkwine said.
Drinkwine said only minor infractions have been found at many of the homes. The property owner has 30 days to make needed repairs. If they fail to fix the infractions, the landlords will face a $50 per day fine. After years without inspections both men said a big part of their job while inspecting homes is educating everyone involved.
"People are unaware of some of the requirements and if people by nature aren't reminded to keep up on certain things those things fall by the wayside so a little prompting is really what's required," Drinkwine said.
"It's a huge learning curve for the community, for property owners and tenants as well. I think education is going to be they're biggest obstacle," Franklin said.
Franklin said most tenants and landowners are cooperating with the inspections. Officials plan on inspecting 20 homes a week, and expect to be finished this fall.
Lafayette police took the dangerous dog into custody Tuesday night, but not before it attacked again. On Wednesday, authorities said they euthanized the pit bull.
