INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indianapolis Metropolitan police officers are investigating a suspicious device at the Minton-Capehart Federal Building, 575 N. Pennsylvania Street Monday afternoon.
IMPD PIO Christopher Bailey says police located a cylindrical device that is four inches long in an X-ray machine inside the building.
An x-ray technician caught it as it was going through the machine and called police.
The building was evacuated.
One person is in custody, Bailey said.
Officials say roads around the building are closed as police set up a safety buffer. Pennsylvania Street is closed south to Vermont Street and North Street is closed from Alabama to Meridian streets.
That is just one block from the Federal Courthouse where a backpack containing marijuana and fireworks was found early Monday morning.
Steve Hicks just started working in the building a week ago on the third floor of the VFW.
He says they all evacuated in an orderly fashion. Employees in his area went down a stairwell.
Hicks said he was in the army at Fort Sill the day when the Oklahoma Federal Building explosion happened. He says it's never routine; you have to treat it as anything could happen.
Liz Durden was inside the building on the fourth floor - the Internal Revenue Service part of the building.
She says a large message came on the intercom for people to evacuate.
She said the message was, "Everyone must leave the building right now. This is not a drill. Everyone must leave the building immediately."
