TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - A 60-year-old man wanted on a child sex charge was pulled over on Interstate 65 with a child on his lap Thursday.
State police pulled over the semi Norman Shields was driving at mile marker 178 near the State Road 43 exit about 11:30 a.m after drivers had called in saying they saw a child riding on his lap.
After he was pulled over, troopers determined the Chicago man was wanted on a California warrant for a charge of lewd acts with a child under 14 years old dating back to 1989.
Shields was also cited for not keeping a log book summarizing his movements on the road, as required by Federal Motor Carrier Regulations.
The two-year-old was not kidnapped.
Troopers said Shield had both the mother's and the company's permission for the child to ride in the truck.
The child was taken into Child Protective Services custody.
Shields is in the Tippecanoe County Jail pending extradition to California.
