SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana woman has been charged with neglect of a dependent after authorities found the body of a premature baby in a trash bin outside a strip mall in Mishawaka.
The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office announced the charges Wednesday against 32-year-old Purvi Patel of Granger. She was released from jail on $10,000 bond.
According to a probable cause affidavit, a forensic pathologist said the baby was born Saturday about 12 weeks premature. Dr. Joseph Prahlow says baby had been had been born alive and took a breath. More tests results are pending.
The affidavit says Patel admitted obtaining drugs to induce labor.
It's not clear whether Patel has hired an attorney. She has an unlisted telephone number.
