LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Police say a woman may have tried to get back at her estranged husband this week by running him and his girlfriend over with a car – all while her two kids were in the vehicle.
The Lafayette Police Department (LPD) says it all happened at roughly 4:45 a.m. Monday in the 1400 block of Sunset Ridge Drive.
According to LPD Lt. Brad Hayworth, 31-year-old Erin Fikes was driving a car near a building in the area with the intent to run over her estranged husband and his girlfriend. (LPD originally told us Erin was 21 - we corrected this error.)
LPD says Erin was later determined to have been under the influence of alcohol during the crash.
The couple is still married, according to Lt. Hayworth.
LPD says as Erin began to ram the car toward the couple, her husband, 31-year-old Jacob Fikes, jumped out of the way and was unharmed by the car.
However his girlfriend, 22-year-old Brittany Libby, was unable to get out of the way of the car, which plunged into the building. She was pinned under the vehicle until first responders could help her escape.
Libby was taken to Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital and was released after receiving treatment for her injuries.
Erin's two children, ages 13 and 5, were in the car at the time of the incident.
Erin was trapped in the car after the crash and was also taken to Franciscan St. Elizabeth Central Hospital. Her condition is unknown at this time.
Erin is facing three preliminary charges: operating while intoxicated, operating while intoxicated with a minor in the car and criminal recklessness.
City engineers will be inspecting the building Monday for structural damage from the crash.
