SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Police are searching for a man who escaped from a northern Indiana jail by getting into a bread delivery truck with the keys in the ignition and smashing it through a gate to escape.
St. Joseph County police Sgt. William Redman says 27-year-old Franklin Rice of South Bend escaped about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday from the jail, and ran from the truck. Police believe he got into another vehicle and fled the area. Redman says police have found Rice's jail-issued hat and shirt nearby.
Rice is described as a 5-11 male with a Mohawk haircut.
Redman says Rice was scheduled to be sentenced next week on a burglary conviction. He had been working in the jail's kitchen area since November.
