LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The former hospital CEO accused of stealing more than $800,000 from an area hospital is back behind bars in the United States.
Earlier this month, Paul Cardwell was arrested in Thailand after being a federal fugitive since disappearing in August.
Prosecutors say Cardwell stole almost $1.7 million combined in the last decade at the White County Memorial Hospital in Monticello and a Wyoming healthcare business. Authorities say Cardwell would send the money to a fake recruiting firm run by Michael Plake of West Lafayette, who was sentenced to 30 months in prison last month.
A spokesman with the U.S. Attorney's office says Cardwell returned to the U.S. Wednesday and appeared before the Federal Magistrate in San Francisco Thursday.
U.S. marshals are expected to bring him back to Wyoming within the next two weeks.
