LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Rio Michaels, 40, got a sentence of 10 years for carrying a handgun with a prior felony conviction and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
Prosecutors say Michaels called police in June 2012 after his wife told him someone was trying to break in. Michaels took his wife's handgun from her and left the house to wait for officers.
Though his wife told officers she fired a round into the ground in the back yard, neighbors say they saw a Hispanic man on the porch fire one shot into the air.
Prosecutors say police found a shell casing on his front porch.
Michaels was sentenced to eight years in prison and two years supervised probation.
It's been nearly a month since a tornado damaged Southwestern Middle School and Mintonye Elementary School, giving faculty the task of helping students transition to their new surroundings.
There were several two hour delays for area schools Thursday morning. As of Thursday evening, there are none for Friday morning.
Donations are being accepted to help around 300 seniors receive a holiday gift.
