GREATER LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A group of hospital employees is volunteering to help end obesity in the United States by beautifying Indiana's parks.
IU Health employees across the Indiana took part in their "Annual Day of Community Service" Friday.
They planted flowers, spread mulch and pulled weeds in hopes to draw attention to local parks and get people active.
IU Health Arnett CEO Al Gatmaitan says an active lifestyle will lead to healthy life.
"We want to certainly do our part to beautify, but we also hope our presence here helps draw attention to them," Gaitmaitan said. "Attention to the need to be active on a daily basis."
Roughly 2,000 IU Health employees are taking part in the project which is taking place in 17 parks across Indiana.
A shooting on Lafayette's south side is under investigation.
It's been nearly a month since a tornado damaged Southwestern Middle School and Mintonye Elementary School, giving faculty the task of helping students transition to their new surroundings.
Donations are being accepted to help around 300 seniors receive a holiday gift.
