Pacers GM leaving team

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Indiana Pacers announced Tuesday afternoon that General Manager David Morway has resigned.

"I've had a terrific 13-plus years with the franchise," said Morway, who has been GM since April 2008 and has been with the franchise since January 1999, hired as vice president of basketball administration. "The performance of this year's team both on and off the court was incredibly rewarding. To experience Bankers Life Fieldhouse full to the rafters again, with an energy reminiscent of the late 90s, and to see our fan base re-engaged and proud made it all worthwhile.

He said in a news release that after lengthy consideration of his personal, family and professional goals and discussion with owner Herb Simon and team President Larry Bird, he believed “this is the right time to step away.” He went on to think Pacers leaders present and past, along with they players, coaches, staff, fans and the Indianapolis community, for the opportunity.

"We are very appreciative of David’s efforts the entire time he has been here," Simon said. "His work ethic and dedication to making this franchise better was unwavering through many good times and some difficult times. Whatever direction his professional future takes him, I’m certain he will have success and a positive impact."

News of Morway's departure came on the same day rumors were swirling about Bird himself . The Pacers have thus far refused to comment on reports that the team president was also leaving. The team has scheduled a news conference at 11 a.m. Wednesday, but did not reveal the topics to be addressed.
