CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. (CNN) - It is a missing-item mystery and the lead troops are on the case.

In a place where Christmas trees come to be rested and recycled right behind a mall, cub scouts took in more than just pine needles and branches. It was like finding a needle in a haystack.

The holiday known for the five golden rings yielded a single, abandoned hand-crafted one right in the drop-off lot. The troop of 5- to 9-year-old detectives is hard at work trying to track down the owner in the case of the missing ring.

But, in the meantime, they put it with the rest fo the lost, left-behinds. The owner should know the ring is safe with them, even if they are having a tough time resting easy without it.
