FOSTORIA, Ohio (WUPW) - It seems a Fostoria prostitute picked the wrong person to proposition. You could call it the opposite of a police sting.
Fostoria Police Chief John McGuire first thought some of his officers were playing a joke on him. He said it's definitely a first.
According to officials, Catherine Tate approached the police chief's unmarked police vehicle and offered him sex on Tuesday afternoon.
"Basically wanted me to, as she stated, show her the goods," Chief McGuire said.
She is spending 15 days in jail after pleading no contest Thursday morning in municipal court to soliciting prostitution and two drug-related charges.
The chief said the proposition went down in the parking lot of a Dollar General store. He was driving an unmarked police vehicle and stopped to return a text message when a woman approached.
"Basically she just said, 'Honey I got what you're looking for. And can I take care of you? How much money do you have?'," Chief McGuire said. "Once I found out she was serious I made a quick stop back to my office, picked up one of the officers, and had him position himself in the back seat."
A tape recorder rolled as Chief McGuire picked Tate up and drove around town until he had enough evidence on tape.
There were a couple of times he was sure she'd figured him out.
"She certainly wanted to know how much money I had with me in my wallet," Chief McGuire said. "In my haste to make sure we got this transaction on tape, I pulled out my wallet and momentarily forgot my badge is in my wallet. She didn't see the badge."
"She saw the $20," the police chief added. "That was her agreed upon price for the act she wanted to perform."
Chief McGuire said if Tate would have just looked up, she would have seen the police lights above the sun visor.
The police chief wouldn't go as far as to say Fostoria has a prostitution problem, but he is noticing a lot more. It's something his department will work to clean up.
