APPLE VALLEY, Minn. (CNN/KARE) - The mother of a newborn said a hospital nurse gave her son to another woman for breast-feeding.
Tammy Van Dyke is now resting at home with her son Cody in Apple Valley, Minn., but Abbott Northwestern Hospital admits to the mix-up.
The hospital released a statement saying a newborn was taken to the wrong room and "briefly breast-fed" by another mother.
"I still can't process what happened," said Van Dyke. "And then they tested the mother for HIV and hepatitis. They tested me. They tested Cody. Everybody's negative, so that's the good news."
According to the hospital's statement, the nurse did not follow proper procedures and match the codes on the infant's bands to the mother's.
A spokeswoman from the hospital called what happened "a terrible mistake" and said there will be consequences.
