CARROLL COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Dave McDowell, Carroll County Emergency Management
Director, explains how the flooding occurs. There are two lakes in
the area, Freeman and Schafer. He explains that the lakes are not
big enough to hold as reservoirs long enough to keep flooding from
getting out of control. If they know there will be heavy rainfall
and drain both lakes, they can only hold water temporarily.
He also touches upon the occurence of the floods. He explains
that, of the five major floods to hit the Oakdale dam area and
affect the Tippecanoe river in Carroll county, four of them have
happened in the last 10 years. He attributes that to an increase of
people living in the area, which in turn creates more run off and
less ground surface for the water to be absorbed. Due to that, he
believes that spring flooding could become more of a common pattern
and expects they may be a little more severe.
Lastly, he touches upon the sites most affected. Anything
along the Tippecanoe river in Carroll county, Horseshoe Bend,
Tecumseh Bend and county roads by the Oakdale dam...specifically CR
1200 and 1225.
