SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - An explosion and fire Tuesday night in Shelby County sent four family members to area hospitals, one of them seriously injured, emergency officials said.

Emergency crews were called to the scene just before 8 p.m. Tuesday. When firefighters arrived to the home in the 5700 block of West Shelby County Road 1100 North, they found the home engulfed in flames, two people in the front yard and two others at a neighbor’s home.

“The neighbor says they heard a loud boom and then people showed up,” said Moral Township Fire Department Capt. David Riggins.

One person was flown to IU Health Methodist Hospital, and the other three were taken to Methodist via ambulance. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, emergency officials said.

The explosion knocked the home off its foundation, and the home is considered a total loss, emergency officials said.

The cause of the explosion is as yet undetermined. Investigators were planning to pick back up Wednesday morning, Riggins said.
