Winamac to honor Wounded Warriors

WINAMAC, Ind. (WLFI) - The Winamac Warriors are gearing up for its Midwest Conference game against rival West Central on Friday. It will be an exciting night for the Warriors, not just because of the game but also what they will be wearing.

"Last fall the coaches were sitting around and talking about it. We had watched the Army Navy game and Army came out in those camouflage jerseys and shoes. The kids came up with the idea to wear camouflage jerseys. The kids are unbelievably fired up to wear these jerseys," said Winamac head coach Tim Roth.

The 'Maroon Platoon' as the Warriors are called, will auction off the camouflage jerseys after the game and donate the money to the wounded warrior project, which supports injured veterans.

"You hear all the time in the news that soldiers have a tough time adjusting to the normal civilian life. So, that is our goal to raise a lot of money by selling the jerseys. Plus letting the kids have a night that is different and is very special for them," said Roth.

The night especially means a lot to two of Winamac's players, who have family serving in the military.

"It means quite a bit because my dad was a veteran. He was in the marines for a couple of years. He is going to enjoy it and has been talking about it quite a bit," said Gavin Fullmer.

"I am pretty excited about it. Like Gavin I have family that has been in the Marines too and it’s nice to do a part and help out with all of it," said Billy Bunkowfat.

Winamac is hoping for a win on Friday, but regardless of the outcome, the Warriors have guaranteed a win off the field.
