WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The boys and girls' state cross country meets will take place Saturday in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Three area teams will be competing in the state finals. The boys' teams are from West Lafayette and McCutcheon.
The girls' team that will represent the area is West Lafayette. The Lady Red Devils are coming off a semistate championship at New Prairie last weekend.
West Lafayette's best finish at state is third place but this season the Lady Red Devils hope to take first place and upset the number one ranked team in the nation in Carmel.
"We are confident in our abilities and all that we have trained for this year," said West Lafayette's Bobbie Burgess. "We have put ourselves in position to challenge Carmel and I believe it is something that we can do."
"We have been having theme days each day this week and we are trying to keep the race in mind and just trying to stay super positive," said West Lafayette's Cailey Daluga. "Our sophomore year was the first time we had ever got third in state and before that was just fifth and to be able to get first would be a dream. I think we need to just stay positive and run it like a normal race."
The meet will take place at the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course on Saturday. The girls race is set for 1:00 pm while the boys race is set for 1:45 pm.
