BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WLFI) - The Indiana Hoosiers dominated Purdue from start to finish and showed why they are the top ranked team in college basketball. As Indiana (23-3, 11-2 Big Ten) knocked off Purdue (12-14, 5-8), 83-55 on Saturday afternoon.
For most of the first half Indiana ran through, around, and over the Purdue Boilermakers. Indiana led by as many as 34 points thanks in large part to a game high 22 points from junior Will Sheehey. In all, four Hoosiers finished in double figures.
Purdue never led in the game and trailed 33-14 with 7:06 remaining in the first half before Purdue finally showed some enthusiasm and energy. Purdue would finish the first half on a 15-8 run and only trailed by 12 at the half.
However, the Hoosiers came out firing in the second half and never let the Boilermakers get any closer. The Boilermakers were led in scoring by junior Terone Johnson and redshirt sophomore Anthony Johnson who both scored 11 points.
“It's very frustrating, going back to how hard we practiced and the whole year we've been working hard as a team and then to lose like this twice, it bother us a lot,” said redshirt sophomore guard Anthony Johnson.
The bright spot of the bench for the old gold and black was junior forward Sandi Marcius who scored 7 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and blocked 2 shots in 17 minutes of action.
Freshman center A.J. Hammons who scored 30 points against Indiana two weeks ago, finished with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block and a steal in 21 minutes of action.
Indiana’s 28 point win gives the Hoosiers a 32.5 pt average victory margin over Purdue this season. IU-PU rivalry record for 1 season is 35 by Purdue in the 1902 & 1912 season.
“It's just really frustrating. I think they (Indiana) weren't having a good year the first year I got here. And for them to work hard and become the team they became now, that says a lot about them. And that's something we need to take into account going on for the rest of the season,” said junior guard Terone Johnson.
Purdue will return to action next Sunday when the Boilermakers host Northwestern at Mackey Arena. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m. ET.
