Shoop to lead Boilers offense

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Purdue head football coach Darrell Hazell announced on Friday that John Shoop has been hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Boilermakers. Shoop’s addition leaves Purdue two coaches shy of a full staff.

“Coach Shoop is a great guy and a smart coach that understands the team culture we’re building at Purdue,” Hazell said. “He has a ton of experience at the highest levels of football, having served as an offensive coordinator in both the NFL and college. I love what his knowledge and expertise brings to Purdue, but I really value his notion of family and team-building that will play a vital role for us.”

Shoop joins the Boilermakers after spending five seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at North Carolina. While at UNC, Shoop helped lead the Tar Heels to four consecutive bowl games from 2008 to 2011, and Giovani Bernard became the Heels’ first 1,000-yard rusher in 14 seasons when he finished with 1,253 yards on the ground in 2011.

Prior to UNC, Shoop spent the previous 12 years of his career in the professional ranks with four different National Football League teams. He broke into pro coaching profession as an offensive quality control assistant with Carolina from 1995 to 1996 and served as the quarterbacks coach with the Panthers from 1997 to 1998. Following Carolina, he moved on to the Chicago Bears, where he worked as the quarterbacks coach for two seasons (1999 to 2000) before taking over as the offensive coordinator from 2001 to 2003. The Bears went 13-3 in 2001 and won the NFC Central title. That season, running back Anthony Thomas earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors after setting the Bears' rookie rushing record with 1,183 yards. Shoop also served as the quarterbacks coach for Jon Gruden in Tampa Bay in 2004 and as the quarterbacks (2005) and tight ends (2006) coach for Oakland before joining the staff at UNC.

Shoop began his coaching career as a volunteer quarterbacks coach at Dartmouth in 1991 and served as a graduate assistant at Vanderbilt from 1992 to 1994, where he also earned a master's degree in education.

Shoop graduated from the University of the South in 1991, where he played quarterback for four seasons.
