WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Purdue head football coach Darrell Hazell announced that Rubin Carter has been hired to coach the Boilermakers’ defensive line.

“I love what Coach Carter brings to Purdue,” Hazell said. “He is a 12-year NFL veteran with over 25 years of coaching experience on all different levels. He has been a head coach, spent seven years with three NFL teams and coached on the college and high school levels. He is a great man that our players will learn a tremendous amount from both on and off the field.”

A veteran with 26 years of coaching experience, Carter joins the Purdue staff after spending the previous season as the defensive line coach at Towson University. In his one year at Towson, Carter helped lead the Tigers to a share of the Colonial Athletic Association title with a unit that ranked 13th nationally in total defense and 20th in sacks per game.

Carter has coaching experience on all levels of football, having served as the defensive line coach in the National Football League with the Denver Broncos (1987-88), Washington Redskins (1999-2000) and New York Jets (2001-03); on the collegiate level at New Mexico (2009-11), Temple (2004-05), Maryland (1997-98), San Jose State (1995-96) and Howard (1989-93) and on the prep level at Miami (Fla.) Killian High School (1994-95). He also spent three seasons as the head coach at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee (2005-07).

A 1974 All-American nose tackle at Miami (Fla.), Carter went on to spend 12 seasons in the NFL with Denver. A member of the famed “Orange Crush” defense, he played on five AFC West championship teams and in two Super Bowls (1978, 1987). In 1977, Carter was featured on a Sports Illustrated cover which touted him as "The Prototype NT in the 3-4 Defense."
