WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The No. 22/12 Purdue women’s golf team won the Mary Fossum Invitational. It was the first event of the fall season as Purdue won in impressive fashion as all five Boilermakers placed in the top 25 en route to a seven-stroke victory over host Michigan State on Sunday.
Purdue shot an 11-over par 875, tying the 54-hole record for the Mary Fossum Invitational. The Boilermakers earned a score of 297 in the final round after recording 288 and 290 in the two rounds Saturday. Senior Paula Reto and freshman Margaux Vanmol led the Boilermakers by tying for fourth place as individuals with scores of 219.
Senior Laura Gonzalez-Escallon fired a three round total of 220. Gonzalez-Escallon had the low round of the day for the Boilers with a 71.
Purdue's win is the first time the Boilers have opened the season with a win since 2006-07.
The Boilermakers will be idle until the Liz Murphey Fall Preview on Oct. 5 to 7 in Athens, Ga. That event will give Purdue an opportunity to play on the course that is the site of the 2013 NCAA Championships and will pit the Boilermakers against the top teams in the country.
