Purdue hosts volleyball camps

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - This is the tenth year Purdue has hosted volleyball camps on campus. The camps at Purdue began in 2003.

Around 800 campers are taking part in the camps this week. Players have come from 15 different states, Canada, and Puerto Rico to participate in the events.

"We feel like our job at Purdue is to continue to grow volleyball and the development of volleyball and we think doing the camps and doing a really good job with the camps is a great way to fill that role," said Purdue volleyball coach Dave Shondell.

The extreme heat this weekend has shrunk the number of courts available from 21 to 12. The campers have been using Cardinal Court, which is air conditioned, and the courts at West Lafayette high school.

This will be the final year the non-air conditioned dorms will be used to house the campers. Next year, the switch will be made to the air conditioned dorms.

"This is going to be the last year that we are in non-air conditioned dorms and we have made that decision. It will cost a little bit more money and it is a little bit further of a walk from where we practice. It's really important that these kids get a good night of sleep at this time of the year," said Dave Shondell.
