Purdue football team gets 3 mid-year additions

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The Boilermaker football program added three mid-year enrollees to its roster for this semester.

Quarterback Danny Elting, defensive end John Strauser and running back David Yancey have enrolled in classes and will be participating in team activities under first-year head coach Darrell Hazell immediately.

Elting joins Purdue from South Vigo High School in Terre Haute, Ind. He is rated as a four-star prospect and is listed as the No. 12 “Pro-Style Quarterback” by Rivals.com. MaxSports.com’s Tom Lemming lists the 6-foot-3, 215-pounder as the No. 20 “Pro-Style Quarterback” in the nation among the 2013 class.

Elting was selected as one of 25 prep quarterbacks nationally to compete at the Elite 11 finals in Redondo Beach, Calif., last summer. As a senior, he threw for 1,505 yards and 11 touchdowns for South Vigo. Etling’s cousin, Joe Holland, was a four-year starter at linebacker for the Boilermakers from 2008-11.

Six-foot-3, 245-pound Strauser is from Champaign, Ill. He is a three-star prospect and the 35th-ranked player in Illinois by Rivals.com. He was named an all-area player at St. Thomas More by the News-Gazette following the 2011 and 2012 seasons. A two-way all-conference selection in 2012, he set a school record for tackles as a junior (146) and followed up with 142 as a senior, pushing his career school mark to 411. Strauser had eight tackles for loss in 2012 and 24 in his career. His uncle, Paul Chryst, is the head football coach at Pitt.

Yancey, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound back from Schererville, Ind., is a three-start prospect and the No. 22 player in the state by Rivals.com. He rushed for 1,345 yards and 16 touchdowns while helping to lead Lake Central High School to a Duneland Conference championship in 2011. As a senior, he finished with 1,168 yards and 17 touchdowns before injury derailed his season.
