NEW YORK, NY. (WLFI) - Oregon State held off Purdue 66-58 on Friday in the third-place game of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project.
Coming off a heartbreaking loss to Villanova in overtime on Thursday night, the Boilermakers had a chance to win in the final minutes again on Friday night. However, in the final two minutes Purdue was outscored by Oregon State 8-2.
"They played harder than us," said center A.J. Hammons, who finished with 20 points and eight rebounds. "That's all it was. They wanted it more. We started off good the first minute or two, but they started crashing the boards and I don't know what happened,” said Hammons.
What happened was the Purdue men’s basketball team will return from their trip to New York with a 1-3 record and lots of unanswered questions.
Oregon State was led by Devon Collier who tallied 27 points and 14 rebounds off the bench for the Beavers. Coller was efficient as he shot 9-of-15 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the foul line.
Oregon State took a 39-28 lead into halftime. The Beavers shot 41 percent from the floor, while Purdue shot 31 percent of its field goal attempts in the first 20 minutes.
The Beavers extended their lead to 15 early in the second half, but Purdue chipped away down the stretch and it eventually tied the game at 56-56 with 2:17 left on a pair of Hammons free throws.
Purdue finished 9 of 16 (56 %) at the foul line in the first ever meeting between the schools.
