Purdue designates Michigan as the Hammer Down Cancer Game

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The Purdue football game against Michigan on Oct. 6 has been designated as the Hammer Down Cancer Game.

Fans are asked to wear cancer-supporting shirts to help those battling the disease and honor those who have survived.

An officially licensed Purdue t-shirt has been produced and is available for $16 online at purduesports.com and at Follett’s and Purdue Pride. A portion of the proceeds from these sales will go toward the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research. Also available are pins and lanyards.

The Boilermakers plan to display their support for cancer research by wearing pink wristbands during the game against the Wolverines that kicks off at 4 p.m. at Ross-Ade Stadium.

The Purdue Center for Cancer Research brings together the best minds from within Purdue University and beyond to study cancers where they start – inside the cell. The researchers discover how cancers develop, progress and respond to treatment. Their work leads to the advancement of new medicines, diagnostic tools and treatment devices.

The Center for Cancer Research has been a National Cancer Institute designated research center since 1978. The center’s research team is made up of more than 85 faculty members from various schools, colleges and departments campus-wide. Fourteen drugs are being tested in clinical trials.

October is breast cancer awareness month. The center has a breast cancer research discovery group that is doing innovative research on breast cancer prevention, nutrition, diagnostics and treatment.

We encourage anyone who has an interest or passion in cancer research to make a donation to the center. Research is only limited by resources. You can make a donation online at cancerresearch.purdue.edu or by mail to Purdue University Center for Cancer Research, Hansen Life Sciences Building, 201 S. University Street, West Lafayette, IN 47907.
