ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WLFI) - Purdue's baseball team beat the 2011 Big East champion Connecticut in their season opener for the second year in a row. Purdue used back-to-back three-run rallies late in the game to pick up the 9-4 win.
The Boilermakers played an error-free game and did not issue a walk in the win. Purdue's starting pitcher Joe Haase, surrendered four runs over five innings, with all four runs scoring with two outs.
Purdue's Tyler Spillner was not retired on the day and scored three times to go along with two singles and two walks. Spillner scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning on the second of two balks.
The Boilers also picked up a win in their night game against Cincinnati. Purdue pitched a shut out, 6-0. The Boilermakers improve to 2-0.
Purdue will now take on Notre Dame on Sunday in Florida at 10 a.m.
