WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Harrison's Kayla Ostrom is coming off a solid junior campaign, but entering her senior year, her role changed due to a young Raiders team.
"Obviously we had a strong senior class that had a lot of experience and they were really good leaders and volleyball players. It has been an adjustment and I have been trying to do my best leading this team," said senior Kayla Ostrom.
Ostrom has become a leader for this Raiders team. She has had more of a vocal presence on the court with her teammates and she has raised her level of play.
"It's not necessarily in my personality to be the vocal leader and to tell people what to do. Now I see what needs to be said and I say it," said Ostrom.
"If she feels like I am doing something that is not being effective or if her teammates are doing something that doesn't make them effective on the court, she is always the first one to step up and have those conversations," said Harrison volleyball head coach Lindsay Charles.
Ostrom is savoring each match she plays in this season. She hopes the Raiders help extend her career with a deep post season run.
"It has definitely gone by fast and I just want to cherish the rest of the season. With sectionals we really want that title back from last year and we are hoping to compete in regionals," said Ostrom.
After Ostrom graduates from Harrison, she will begin her career at the collegiate level as a walk-on with Purdue's volleyball team.
"It is such an honor to be able to say that I can walk on with Purdue. Just growing up I would always go to volleyball game and just to think that I have the opportunity to be one of those players and that well established program under great coaches, it's just very exciting for me," said Ostrom.
"She has worked for every inch of that opportunity. Purdue is a very successful program and we are very proud that she gets to go there. I think it also leaves a legacy for our younger kids to follow," said Charles.
The future looks bright for this Raider volleyball star.
