WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - To the surprise of no one, Purdue women's basketball standout Drey Mingo has approached her rehab with a fierce attitude on the court, and an ever-present smile when asked about her recovery from a season-ending knee injury suffered during preseason workouts.
"I am doing very well. I'm progressing very well in rehab. Just trying to get back on my feet, so, hopefully I can do a little bit towards the end of the season. The value of the people that I have around me and surrounding me is awesome. And to be able to go through this and know that I'm not alone in any aspect of it, I think, has been very good for me," said senior forward Drey Mingo.
"She's just doing exceptionally well and she is exceptionally positive. So, she just continues to be a great role model for all of us," said Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp.
Mingo is quite familiar with adversity, having been in critical condition from bacterial meningitis in November 2010, and yet her attitude remains more inspiring and positive than ever. One teammate, who especially keeps the Boiler tri-captain in positive spirits, is sophomore guard K.K. Houser, who missed last season with a major knee injury.
"Drey's such a cheerful, happy person. And she's so into her faith. I knew she'd be OK. Drey leans on me, just a little bit, though, because she honestly doesn't need it that often. She's just always so high-spirited," said Purdue guard K.K. Houser.
"When K.K .just sees that look in my face, like if I'm having a tough rehab day, she'll just be like 'you know what, you got it'. Without me even saying anything," said Mingo.
Mingo, a senior, has petitioned for a sixth year of eligibility with the NCAA and Purdue might get a response during late March. One thing's for sure, Mingo wants to get back on the court next season in a Purdue uniform.
